E-Coated Lower Arm
The component shown here is manufactured as a lower arm for an automotive suspension system. The customer needed to have a large number of these parts E-coated in an ongoing basis. The part, which measures 18" in length, by 13" in width, and 2" in thickness required special racks to be fabricated to facilitate the coating process.
Production requirements dictated that 4,000 of these pieces be coated daily. This meant that the racks had to not only allow for complete coverage of the coating, but they had to be designed to easily allow placement and removal of parts. The coating consisted of a PPG pre-treatment, followed by a zinc phosphate, and BASF E-coat application, with a minimum film thickness 25 microns. After curing, parts are subject to stringent quality inspections. Complete coverage of the interior and exterior surfaces is verified as well as inspections for overall quality, film build, and visual defects. Parts are then packaged into cell divided bins and shipped to the customer.
